I just wanted to briefly discuss what I have found. In all three empirical studies and one of the newspaper articles I attached it was made pretty clear that the authoritarian parenting style can really cause for negative outcomes things like depression, behavioural problems, and obesity. These three issues are very serious and can have life lasting effects. I believe the problem with the authoritarian approach is that it is too much about power and control and does not provide children with the nurture and support they really need to thrive throughout life. That is why I think the authoritative approach is the one most often recommended because it does provide both control and support which leads the child to a more successful life. Ultimately I would like to believe that most parents would like their children to be happy and successful and that doesn’t seem to occur when the authoritarian approach is practiced in the home.
